sleep clinic

Problems with sleeping including snoring and sleep apnoea are common.  Do you have any of the following signs?
  • Loud snoring
  • Resless sleep
  • Unrefreshed on waking up
  • Daytime fatigue and headaches
  • Poor concentration and memory loss
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness.
If so you may have obstructive sleep apnea.  A sleep study is available on site.  Please consult one of our GPs on how it might help you.

Snoring occurs when normal breathing is obstructed and the muscle tone in the airways become floppy.  It can have detrimental affects on sleep quality but also on the quality of sleep for the partner.

Sleep apnoea is a less well known however up to 70 % of snorers may have it.  Sleep apnoea involves the airway becoming completely obstructed which can disrupted sleep, risk of further chronic conditions and reduced oxygen flow to the body and brain.

Two of the common modern strategies for management of sleep are:
  • CPAP unit which involves wearing a mask at night to maintain pressure in the airways and keep them open.
  • Mandibular Advancement Splints which also keep airways open but is a less intrusive device.
  • Other more invasive (and less commonly required) techniques including laser and surgery.

Speak to your doctor about your sleep health and see if there is a solution for you.
